2025 Irrigation Season launched

Lasha Dolidze-Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Gigla Tamazashvili-General Director of “Georgian Amelioration” ltd and Levan Khaziuri-Deputy Mayor of Gurjaani Municipality symbolically opened the outlet gate of the rehabilitated Lakbe reservoir to celebrate the 2025 irrigation season start. Local farmers attended the process of releasing water into the irrigation scheme.

The Deputy Minister talked about the role of amelioration in agricultural production.

“Improving amelioration and land management plays a critical role in agricultural development. The Ministry will actively continue to work in this direction. The Lakbe reservoir is an important new facility that will successfully ensure supply of water to farmers,” Lasha Dolidze said.

Gigla Tamazashvili emphasized the significance of proper operation of  ameliorative schemes for the regional development.

"It’s impossible to develop agriculture without amelioration. Repair-rehabilitation of ameliorative infrastructure is of great importance. In this direction we are implementing large-scale projects, thereby enabling farmers and people employed in agriculture to produce high-quality, high-value products. Lakbe reservoir has been rehabilitated in Gurjaani municipality with an investment of several million Georgian Lari. The works carried out will ensure proper operation of the reservoir and additional feeding of  water distribution canals (G-41 and G-42) of the left main canal of Kvemo Samgori irrigation scheme. As a result,  irrigation water supply will  be improved  on 1,465 ha of agricultural land area," - Gigla Tamazashvili mentioned.

It ‘d be noted that as a result of the amelioration infrastructural projects implemented in Kakheti region within the years 2012-2024, an additional 20,140 ha of agricultural land  area has been water supplied, irrigation water supply has improved to 16,285 ha, while drainage covered 8,725 ha.
